Eye Make Up: Creating a Smoky Eye

It’s a special night out, and you need a dramatic eye make up technique that will get all the boys’ attention. The smoky eye is what you want. The technique requires only eight simple steps. You will need: make up primer, a black or brown eye liner, mascara (or fake lashes), at least two soft make up brushes or sponge-tipped applicators, and three shades of eye shadow (including a very dark shade and a very light shade).

1. Apply the make up primer to your eye lid using a soft brush. Primer keeps make up in place and prevents it from fading after a few hours.

2. Then, using the eye pencil of your choice, line the top and bottom lashes. If you want the eyes to appear larger, line only half of the bottom lid, working from the middle to the outside. You don’t have to be very careful for this application because next you will want to smudge the lines slightly to create a soft look. This is easiest when done with a sponge-tipped applicator, but a Q-Tip will work in a pinch.

3. Next, apply the medium shade of eye make up. Cover the lid completely. Do not apply the medium shade to the area above the lid, near the brow.

4. Using the darkest shade, apply a dot of shadow to both corners of the eye lid (close to the top lashes). How much you use will depend on the effect you want. Blend the medium and dark shades of the eye make up, but try to keep the middle portion of the lid lighter. Then create a “cat eye” by sweeping the dark shadow into a point on the outside of the eyes. For a more dramatic effect, you may need to add more dark shadow outside the eyes in order to extend the “cat eye.”

5. Apply the lightest shade of shadow from the top of the eye lid to the bottom of the eye brow. Also, add a bit of the lightest shadow to the center of the eye lid. Blend the colors on the lid slightly to create a shadow effect, with the lightest area being the center of the lids. Also, blend the area where the lightest shadow and the darkest shadow meet at the top of the lid.

6. Using the blending brush, add a bit of dark color underneath the eye near the lashes.

7. Apply mascara or fake lashes. Fake lashes are easy to apply and they really make the eyes pop.

8. Lastly, brace yourself for an evening of lingering eye contact, and be sure to grab your phone on the way out the door because the boys will definitely be calling.
